On their debut album, Aperture Duo (violinist Adrianne Pope and violist Linnea Powell) present diverse sound worlds, spanning the farthest reaches of the violin and viola duo galaxy. Featuring the first recordings of works— commissioned by Aperture Duo—from Los Angeles composers Carolyn Chen, Noah Meites, Andrew Tholl, and Derek Tywoniuk, as well as a recent work from Berlin-based composer Clara Iannotta, the album explores varied styles and techniques including singing while playing, Creole folk music, experimentation with mutes, prepared harmonicas, Irish fiddling, and music based on poetry and prose, all filtered through the sonic lens of Aperture Duo’s distinctive sound. The album includes liner notes by scholar and artist Ashon Crawley as well as original art and album design by Adrianne Pope.
